Our own breed of Taliban

Among many, an new order from the Maharashtra CM, says that all the Cinema owners across Maharashtra will have to play Marathi Movie in the prime time. That is from 6pm to 9pm.

Free Internet? Here is Google's Zero Rating

Emerging markets are receiving lot of attention on software and hardware. Companies are trying to increase internet penetration in underdeveloped areas. One of the roadblocks faced by the companies, is the data cost. It is relatively higher in the underdeveloped areas or countries. With budget smartphones entering these markets the data costs are not going down making the paralysing the entire effort. Thanks to the companies like Google with Project Loon, Facebook with Internet.Org and other projects like Outernet, the challenge of data cost can be taken care off.
With Google’s Zero Rating approach, it is planning to reduce or eliminate data cost for specific apps like Facebook and Whatsapp. Google has asked developers in the emerging markets about the possibilities in Zero Rating. It is still not clear whether or not has approached the local carriers for the same.

Googles’s Zero Rating is expected to see the same sunlight with Android One already Launched in these markets. The entire Concept might not go down well with those who advocate for Net Neutrality.

Three principles of Net Neutrality:
Rule 1: All sites must be equally accessible: ISPs and telecom operators shouldn’t block certain sites or apps just because they don’t pay them. No gateways should be created, in order to give preferential discovery to one site over another.
Rule 2: All sites must be accessible at the same speed (at an ISP/telco level): This means no speeding up of certain sites because of business deals. More importantly, it means no slowing down (throttling) of some sites.
Rule 3: The cost of access must be the same for all sites (per Kb/Mb or as per data plan) This means no “Zero Rating”. In countries like India, Net Neutrality is more about cost of access than speed of access: all lanes are slow.

Lesser known facts about Mahabharata

  • Duryodhana's real name was Suyodhana. And the rest of the clan was Sushaasana, Suchala and so on and not the Dusshaasana, Dusshala etc. that we are familiar with. They were all given nicknames to suit their bad reputation.

  • Shakuni Had 2 sons - Uluka & Vrikaasur. Since Shakuni is mostly seen in Hastinapur, his own family was never given much emphasis. However, the fact remains that he had two sons - Uluka and Vrikaasur. Ulook or Uluka wanted to take his father back to Gandhara before Pandavas came from Agyatvas but, Shakuni did not go back as he wanted to sit and initiate the Kurukshetra war.

  • Yuyutsu, was the only Kaurava who survived after the Kurukshetra War. Yuyutsu, Dhritarashtra’s son from a vyasa dasi did not war from the side of Kauravas but from Pandavas. No, not because he was always taunted by his step brother but he just like Vibhishan was destined to follow the righteous path and so just before the war he chose the side of Pandavas. He was in fact the only surviving son of Dhritarashtra, who although was a son of dasi performed the last rites of his father. He was also the guardian of Parikshit, the grandson and future king of Hastinapur.

Love Rasgulla? Do you know this?

No matter how full you are, you will always find a place for a rasgulla in your stomach. Rasgullas are one of the most popular sweets of Bengal and Odisha. Rasgullas are small ball of Chena boiled in sugar syrup. Yes it is as simple as that and we love it. Now times have changed but even if we go a few years back, our guests would get offended if we don’t serve them Rasgullas in dessert. Bengalis are proud of Rasgullas. There is always a fight between Bengalis and Oriyas on where it came form or who invented it. It is widely believed that Nobin Das, a local confectioner of Kolkata, who was also called Rasagolla's Columbus. During 1868 Nobin Das was improvising on the recipe of a sweet to give a higher shelf life or make it longer lasting. Which will make it easier to market it as a product and that’s how Rasgullas got invented. Later K. C. Das son of Nobin Das gave the rasgullas a new high. This is what we all know.

There is another theory. During the invention of rasgullas in Bengal by Nobin Das, a different form of rasgullas(kheermohan) are already very popular in Odisha. It is believed that sign of rasgulla existence can be traced back to the 13th Century in the Holy City of Puri. Rasgullas were served to Goddess Lakshmi on last day of the Rath Jatra festival at Puri. This is a 700+ year old tradition called NILADRI BIJAY.

Although the theories aren't related as believed. But there is a lesser known fact linking both the theories.
It is believed that the recipe of Rasgulla reached Nobin Das through another confectioner, Haradhan Moira and improvised on it. Nobin Das failed to replicate the complex preparation process in Kolkata and ended up with a much simpler rasgullas that can be prepared at home. There is little reference of Haradhan Moira in history and once in a while his name pops out whenever we go through the past of Rasgulla.

We were not there, we don’t know who made it, but we love it and that is how it is going to be.
